WH Chief of Staff Kelly to step down soon - report

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is set to step down in the coming days, CNN reported on Friday citing two people close to the matter.

According to the report, Kelly and United States President Donald Trump reached a "stalemate in their relationship" and even stopped talking to each other in the past few days. The sources noted Trump is still undecided who will replace Kelly but Vice President Mike Pence's Chief of Staff Nick Ayers is seen as the "leading contender" for the position.

In November, US media reported Kelly may quit as a result of Trump's decision to fire Kelly's ally Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. The White House chief of staff reportedly already threatened Trump with his resignation earlier this year but was then said to have decided to extend his stay in the Trump administration until the end of the president's first term in 2020.
