At least 17 people were killed and 25 rescued after a boat carrying Haitian migrants towards Miami capsized near the Bahamas.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that a twin-engine speed boat left a docking facility off West Bay Street around 1 am [local time] with approximately 60 people on board. It is believed that their final destination was Miami, Florida," Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis stated.
Davis added the country launched a criminal investigation into potential human smuggling following the incident.
