Haitham al-Ghais, who officially starts his role as secretary-general of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Monday, said Russia's OPEC+ membership is vital for the success of the deal.
In an interview with Kuwait's Alrai newspaper on Sunday, Al-Ghais said the organization is not competing with Russia, calling Moscow an "influential player" on the international energy market.
OPEC and its Russia-led allies, together known as OPEC+, are set to discuss production goals for the month of September on August 3. The meeting is especially important for Al-Ghais, as it will be the first OPEC meeting he presides over after succeeding Mohammad Barkindo, who had led the organization since 2016.
