The shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc. tumbled over 5% on Thursday in an extended sell-off sparked by Google's event during which the company presented chatbot Bard, a rival to Microsoft-backed ChatGPT.
Google's video published online depicted Bard showing a wrong answer to a search query. Precisely, Bard claimed that the James Webb Space Telescope, launched in late 2021, took the first pictures of an exoplanet outside the Solar System. However, the information was wrong since NASA's website says the first images were taken in 2004 by another telescope.
Chinese tech giant Alibaba was also reported to be developing its own chatbot system next to Microsoft and Google. Alphabet's stocks plunged 5.36% to $93.02 apiece at 12:33 pm ET, dropping to levels seen two weeks ago.
