Assad: Syria will disappear if terrorists not defeated

EPA / SANA HANDOUT

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Croatian daily Vecernji List published on Thursday that in case terrorism in the Middle Eastern country isn’t defeated, Syria will cease to exist.

“We do not have any other option except victory. If we do not win this war, it means that Syria will be deleted from the map,” Assad claimed. He added he was “confident” the country will be able to defeat the rebels.

Assad accused some Western countries of backing terrorists in Syria by supplying them with weapons and funding them. “Practically, our victory over the terrorists is a victory over all those states put together,” the Syrian president stated.

The armed conflict in Syria between the government and a number of rebel groups and terrorist organizations has been going on since 2011.
