Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen confirmed on Sunday that the country's snap elections will be held in September. Speaking to the journalists, the president noted that there is no fixed date for now.
"My preference is for early elections in September, if possible the beginning of September," stressed Van der Bellen.
Earlier today, Van der Bellen met with the country's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz to discuss the possible date for the upcoming elections following the resignation of Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache. Meanwhile, the opposition Social Democratic Party of Austria, or SPOe, rejected the possibility of a grand coalition with Kurz's Austrian People's Party (OeVP), but it also acknowledged there has been no formal contact since the government crisis began.
