United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump "would not hesitate" to increase the sanctions imposed on Russia for a negotiating advantage.

"It will be determined by Russian leadership's next moves whether the sanctions go up or down. And President Trump, I think, would not hesitate to raise the sanctions if it gives him a negotiating advantage," Bessent said in an interview with Fox News, noting that a part of the national security effort that the US Department of the Treasury does is through financial operations and sanctions.

Earlier today, French President Emmanuel Macron also commented on the sanctions on Russia, saying that it is "too early" to talk about lifting them.
