President Joe Biden arrived in Manaus, Brazil, on Sunday for a historic visit to the Amazon rainforest, becoming the first sitting US president to make the trip.
During his trip, Biden is expected to engage with Indigenous leaders and take an aerial tour of the Amazon rainforest, before heading to Rio de Janeiro for the G20 summit. The outgoing president is expected to announce that Washington fulfilled its "historic pledge" to increase its international climate finance to over $11 billion a year by 2024, becoming the "largest bilateral provider of climate finance in the world," the White House announced ahead of his trip. Biden will also unveil a $50 million donation to Amazon Fund.
The last US president to visit the Amazon rainforest was Theodore Roosevelt, who traveled there in 1913-1914 after his presidency. During the expedition, he had a near-death experience after contracting malaria and suffering from an infected leg.
