United States President Joe Biden blamed a faction of Republican lawmakers for the possibility of government shutdown. He said he reached a spending deal with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during the previous government spending crisis in May but that "now a small group of extreme Republicans don't want to live up to the deal so now everyone in America could be forced to pay the price."
"Funding the government is one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress. It's time for Republicans to start doing the job America elected them to do. Let's get this done," Biden said. Without a funding bill, or at least a short-term stopgap measure, the government will run out of money on September 30, jeopardizing the functioning of federal agencies.
