United States President Joe Biden in a statement praised former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, referring to him as a "rare leader" and a "man of remarkable vision."
Biden commended the diplomatic reforms Gorbachev implemented and applauded his work on making the world a safer place. "These were the acts of a rare leader – one with the imagination to see that a different future was possible and the courage to risk his entire career to achieve it," said Biden.
The statement was issued on Tuesday after Russian officials announced that Gorbachev died of "a serious and long illness" at the age of 91.
