Biden congratulates Trump, hopes for 'smooth' transition

United States President Joe Biden called President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to offer him congratulations on his election win on Tuesday. Biden also invited Trump to the White House to discuss the presidential transition that will last until the 45th president officially begins his second term on January 20, 2025.

Biden expressed his hope for a "smooth" transition, stressing the importance of showing unity. According to the White House, the date of the meeting between Biden and Trump will be set "in the near future."

Biden is expected to offer his comments on the outcome of the election and the transition to a new administration during his address to the nation on Thursday.
