United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Japan on Monday to pay his respects to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the State Department announced on Sunday.

"Secretary Blinken will travel to Tokyo, Japan, to offer condolences to the Japanese people on the death of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and to meet with senior Japanese officials. The US-Japan Alliance is the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and has never been stronger," State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement.

Shinzo Abe died on Friday after being shot in the city of Nara. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party served as the prime minister from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2022, the longest tenure in Japan's history.
