Former President of Bolivia, who stepped down on Sunday, was granted asylum by Mexico, the top diplomat in Mexico City Marcelo Ebrard said on Monday.

Morales resigned after being pressured to do so by the Army and protesters who claimed that his reelection was illegitimate. The Organization of American States (OAS) also declared that the elections in late October, in which Morales was reelected, were marked by many irregularities. Morales then announced the elections would be repeated, however, the pressure to step down after more than 13 years led him to resign.

The OAS will gather on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Bolivia.
