The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that China and Japan reached an agreement over the release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. China has protested the release of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean ever since Japan approved the measure in 2021, although the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) deemed it safe.
The ministry said Japan has committed to "fulfilling its obligations under international law, doing its utmost to avoid leaving a negative impact on human health and the environment, and conducting continuous evaluations of the impact on the marine environment and marine ecosystems." In addition, Japan will allow China and other stakeholders to play a role in monitoring the process and continue to conduct dialogue on the subject. Meanwhile, China pledged to gradually resume imports of Japanese aquatic products after "participating substantively in the long-term international monitoring."
