China says counter duties 'fair and reasonable'

The Chinese embassy in Washington declared on Tuesday that China's actions in response to US-imposed tariffs are entirely "fair and reasonable."

"The US has levied a 10 percent additional tariff on Chinese imports under the pretext of the fentanyl issue. China firmly deplores and opposes this move," the embassy said in a statement on its website. "China has taken necessary countermeasures in accordance with relevant laws, regulations and the basic principles of international law, which are completely fair and reasonable."

Earlier, China retaliated by imposing extra tariffs of up to 15% on certain American goods, effective from February 10. Furthermore, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that the country had submitted a complaint regarding the US tariff measures to the World Trade Organization's (WTO) dispute resolution system.
