Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, responding to a question on Thursday, reaffirmed the country's stance on the Taiwan question and implored countries with ties to it to adhere to the one-China principle.
Responding to reports of former Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen's planned visit to Canada, Lin restated China's opposition to visits by "Taiwan independence separatists" to nations his country has diplomatic ties to "regardless of excuses," urging Canada to adhere to the one-China principle as a means to preserve the country's bilateral relations with China.
This is another hitch in Canada's "difficult" relationship with China, with whom the former has disputes over trade and human rights issues as well as alleged hacking attacks, which Beijing firmly denies.
