Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that Beijing believes that compatriots from Taiwan will refuse to serve as "cannon fodder" for local separatist forces.
Speaking at a regular press conference, the Chinese official also called for a "complete reunification of the motherland" after Taiwan's local authorities decided to extend compulsory military service from four to 12 months.
On the topic of South Korea's Indo-Pacific strategy which was praised by Washington after being announced earlier in the day, Wang said China opposes "exclusive" regional groups and hopes Seoul will work with Beijing "to promote the healthy and stable development" of bilateral relations and peace in the region.
