DOGE allegedly proposes cutting IRS staf by 20%

EPA-EFE/WILL OLIVER

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has proposed dismissing about 20% of the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) staff by May 15, CNN reported on Thursday.

If imposed, the decision would affect about 6,800 employees and potentially the IRS's operations and people filing voluntary tax compliance. "Depending upon how we effectuate these cuts, it could dramatically reduce revenue, dramatically reduce customer service," a source told CNN. "If we are not auditing much, it impacts people’s willingness to file honestly in the first place."

Previously, 6,700 people were already fired from the IRS, while 4,700 agreed to participate in Trump's program of voluntarily leaving in return for a compensation.
