Death toll from Turkey floods rises to 44

EPA / ERDEM SAHIN

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said on Saturday that at least 44 people have died as a result of the flash floods and mudslides in the northern provinces of Bartin, Kastamonu and Sinop.

Meanwhile, an unknown number of people remain missing in the area with some estimates placing the figure as high as 300.

The torrential rains that hit the Black Sea provinces earlier this week demolished homes and bridges just as the country managed to contain dozens of wildfires along its Mediterranean coast.
