At least 40 people have died and hundreds have been displaced as a result of a devastating rainfall that struck Sao Paulo's north shore over the weekend, according to official government estimates.
The authorities in the region confirmed 16 more fatalities in addition to the 24 reported the day before.
During his visit to the area on Monday, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva advocated against new construction in regions vulnerable to large floods and landslides.
