United States District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Tanya Chutkan confirmed on Monday the introduction of a partial gag order in the federal case trying former President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election to prevent him from talking publicly about the details of the trial.

Chutkan made the decision after a court hearing, at which the prosecution insisted the order should be put in place after Trump, in their words, seemingly threatened witnesses and defamed Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith and his spouse.

Trump's lawyer John Lauro voiced his opposition to the order, dismissing it as an attempt to hinder the former president's ongoing campaign and contribute to his successor Joe Biden's re-election. "Every single issue that relates to this case also has political issues," Lauro said.
