The European Council announced on Monday its decision to prolong the sanctions in place as a response to Russia's illegal annexation of Ukrainian Crimea and the city of Sevastopol until June 23, 2025.
These restrictive measures encompass a prohibition on importing goods originating from both territories into the EU, as well as on infrastructure, financial investments, and tourism services. Additionally, the sanctions extend to activities related to the exploration, search, and production of oil, gas, and mineral resources in "the illegally annexed Crimea or Sevastopol."
Initially implemented in June 2014, the sanctions included a perpetual non-recognition strategy regarding Crimea's accession to Russia. All EU member states and candidate countries are obligated to adhere to this strategy.
