The European Union's Foreign Affairs Council agreed on Monday to establish a civilian mission in Armenia following negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. "The objective of the Mission is to contribute to stability in the border areas of Armenia, build confidence on the ground, and ensure an environment conducive to normalization efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan supported by the EU," the bloc stated.

The European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA) will "conduct routine patrolling and report on the situation" as well as mediate between the two sides, the EU said. Bilateral negotiations have stalled lately in spite of the apparent political will in both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
