European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis told the Financial Times in an interview posted on Monday that the European Union is aiming to give additional safeguards related to food trade to countries near Ukraine, offering "country-specific safeguards" that would authorize Brussels to stop imports if a country's market becomes oversaturated.
"We see that this regional impact of trade or exports of Ukrainian agricultural products is very unevenly distributed. It's primarily felt by immediate neighboring countries whereas [it] doesn't create much disruption for the EU market as a whole. We will be looking at how we can provide additional assurances to Poland and other member states," he stated.
Previously, both Poland and Hungary put and extended bans on the import of four types of Ukrainian agricultural products, a move which didn't sit well with Ukraine, as the country said it would sue them.
