The European Commission is set to adopt guidelines to combat election disinformation, requiring platforms like X, TikTok, and others to adopt stricter moderation measures, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the plans.

The guidelines aim to counter online threats to election integrity and could result in fines of up to 6% of global turnover for platforms that fail to address artificial intelligence-powered disinformation or deepfakes.

The guidelines are legally enforceable as part of the Digital Services Act.
