European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell welcomed on Thursday the United Nation's resolution on Myanmar. The UN's Security Council adopted the first resolution on Myanmar in 74 years with 12 votes in favor, while China, Russia and India abstained.
The resolution came in response to almost two years of violence since the military coup in February 2021. Former State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi and a number of other officials were detained after the election won by her party in 2020 was invalidated by the military.
"The message is clear: end the violence, ensure humanitarian access, release prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi, and respect the will of the people," Borrell stated. He added that the EU stands ready to work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and implement its Five-Point Consensus, which focuses on de-escalation, dialogue and humanitarian assistance.
