European countries are working on a plan to be more engaged in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and take some responsibilities off of the United States, the Financial Times reported on Thursday citing European officials.
According to the officials, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Nordics are participating in informal talks to create a transfer plan that would be implemented over the next five to 10 years. The discussions are taking place as the alliance members want to steer clear of the chaos that could ensue if the US decided to leave.
The goal is to draw up a plan that would see the financial and military burden shift away from Washington, including "firm commitments" on boosting European defense spending. The idea would potentially be presented to the US prior to the annual leaders' summit in the Hague in June.
