United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated on Thursday that the Republican-held House of Representatives will not agree to pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling that does not include spending cuts.

"We will never pass a clean debt ceiling without some sort of spending cuts," McCarthy told reporters. "There’ll never be a clean one," he added.

Earlier this week, McCarthy met with US President Joe Biden but the two failed to reach a deal on the debt ceiling and are expected to meet again for further talks. McCarthy noted Biden promised to give him a call to set up the next meeting but gave no timeline for it.
