An explosion at the gas station in Stepanakert, the de facto capital of the breakaway Republic of Artsakh in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, resulted in multiple casualties on Monday, local media reported.

"A gasoline warehouse exploded. The warehouse was used to give out fuel to those who wanted to leave Artsakh in their cars. Hundreds of people were gathered there when the explosion took place," the region's Member of Parliament Metakse Hakobyan told Armenpress, adding that it is unclear how many people died in the incident.

Thousands of people living in the disputed region are said to have fled the region following the recent rise in tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
