The first game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off on Sunday with the host Qatar taking on South American nation Ecuador in Group A.
The two teams are playing at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, north of Qatar's capital, Doha. If Ecuador wins on Sunday it would be the first time in World Cup history for a host to lose the opening game.
At the opening ceremony, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani welcomed football fans from all over the world, commending people who "put aside what divides them in order to celebrate their diversity."
The Qatar World Cup is the first time the tournament is being held in the Middle East.
