Financial Times, OpenAI reach deal on content licensing

EPA-EFE/FILIP SINGER

The Financial Times (FT) announced on Monday it reached an agreement with OpenAI to allow the latter to use the outlet's archived articles and practice its artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

The magazine said that ChatGPT will be able to utilize the FT's earlier content to work on how to create more human-like texts, images, and codes. It will also provide users with summaries of the magazine's articles.

"Apart from the benefits to the FT, there are broader implications for the industry. It's right, of course, that AI platforms pay publishers for the use of their material. OpenAI understands the importance of transparency, attribution, and compensation – all essential for us," the outlet's chief executive John Ridding remarked. "At the same time, it's clearly in the interests of users that these products contain reliable sources."
