Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini (pictured), who also served as a European Union Commissioner and held the position of the President of the Council of State of Italy, died on Saturday at the age of 65, the country's media outlets shared.
Frattini died in the Gemelli hospital in Rome, where he had been hospitalized and treated for cancer. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, under whose government Frattini served as a foreign minister, was among the first to send words of condolences.
"I will always remember his great ability to face complex problems with a smile, to be at ease in every role and the esteem he sowed. I will miss him as well as all the people who were lucky enough to be able to collaborate with him. Hugs to the family," Berlusconi wrote.
