European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday that the increased defense spending in the European Union should also create "good jobs" for European citizens. "It is European taxpayers' billions and billions that we invest so we want a return on our investment," she said at the Munich Security Conference.
Von der Leyen said Ukraine and its allies are learning from the war in Russia and that Kiev is developing ways to upgrade the EU's legacy weapons, including using artificial intelligence. "This is the reason we will integrate Ukraine into our defense programs," she said, adding that the EU will open an office for defense innovation in Kiev.
