France's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot stressed on Monday in an interview with local media Franceinfo that France will support "an inclusive political transition, which allows all minorities to be represented, which respects human rights, women's rights and which allows Syria to embark on the path to a just peace and a lasting peace."
"This is good news for freedom. It is good news for the Syrian people who must now take their destiny into their own hands," he added. "Syria must be returned to the Syrians."
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the toppling of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria, calling it the end of a "barbaric state." Assad found refuge in Russia after being forced out of his country when rebel forces advanced into the capital.
