German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told reporters ahead of an EU-led donor conference in Brussels on Monday that Germany will provide €300 million in aid to support Syria.
"For this mammoth task, Germany will provide the United Nations and selected organizations with a further 300 million euros for this peaceful process and for the people in Syria and the people in the region," Baerbock added. The funding will go towards providing food, health services and emergency shelters, according to the foreign ministry.
She also called for Syria's transitional administration to look into the hundreds of civilian deaths in Alawite villages and hold those responsible for them accountable. Today, the EU will convene global donors in an attempt to mobilize funds for Syria's recovery following the overthrow of longstanding leader Bashar al-Assad. Asaad al-Shibani, the interim foreign minister, is expected to attend the annual meeting in Brussels, marking the first time the Syrian government will be represented.
