World officials attending the Global COVID Summit are expected to announce $3.1 billion in new funding to fight the pandemic, Politico reported on Thursday. The virtual event will be held later in the day, co-hosted by the United States, Germany, Belize, Indonesia and Senegal.
The money will be used to speed up vaccination worldwide and provide access to medication. The US is also expected to pledge another $200 million to the World Bank's Financial Intermediary Fund, helping to "improve local, national and global capacity to prevent, detect and respond to pandemics and other threats to global health security," a source said.
