Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to 13 and a half months in prison for organizing and participating in an unlawful assembly during the anti-government protests in the Chinese autonomous region.
Agnes Chow, another student leader, was sent to prison for 10 months, while their fellow activist Ivan Lam was handed down 7-month imprisonment. All three are facing other charges as well, with Chow being the only one accused of inciting secession, which, in the most severe scenario, could mean her extradition to China, and a potential penalty of life imprisonment.
Wong pleaded guilty before the Hong Kong court a week ago, stressing, at that time, that "neither prison bars, nor election bans, nor any other arbitrary powers" could stop him from standing up to the Beijing regime. He was arrested in September, after having been banned from taking part in the Hong Kong Legislative Council elections along with 11 other candidates.
