Haley claims US isn't changing N.Korea strategy

EPA-EFE / JUSTIN LANE

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley claimed on Sunday that her country hasn't changed its strategy towards North Korea that requires of the isolated country to give up on its nuclear arsenal, despite President Trump saying yesterday that he is open to talking with Pyongyang leader Kim Jong-un.

"There is no turnaround,” Haley said. “What he has basically said is ‘yes, there could be a time where we talk to North Korea,’ but a lot of things have to happen before that actually takes place. They have to stop testing. They have to be willing to talk about banning their nuclear weapons.” The diplomat described the current situation as "dangerous," but said the revival of inter-Korean talks is "good for the United States" despite her belief that the two sides will limit their talks to the Winter Olympics hosted by South Korea next month.

Earlier this week, the US decided to delay its joint military exercise with South Korea in order to accommodate the Olympics, as Seoul and Pyongyang have agreed to hold first official negotiations in more than two years. The main point of the revamped inter-Korean dialogue will be the participation of North Korean athletes in the upcoming Games.
