Hamas initially planned to attack Israel in the fall of 2022 but delayed the operation to gain support from Iran and Hezbollah, according to The New York Times. Additionally, the group's motive was reportedly influenced by a desire to prevent Israel from strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia.

The group reportedly held meetings to discuss how to deceive Israeli authorities into believing the situation was calm by avoiding major conflicts since 2021, as seen in documents captured by Israeli forces.

According to the cited documents, while Iran and Hezbollah supported Hamas' idea, they asked for more time to prepare.
