United States Vice President Kamala Harris commented on Wednesday on President Joe Biden's referring to former head of state and Republican nominee Donald Trump's supporters as "garbage" by saying that she "strongly disagree[s] with any criticism of the people based on who they vote."
"I take very seriously my obligation and my oath to concern myself first with the needs of the American people and put them before whatever might be my selfish issues," Harris told Mary Bruce of ABC News. Still, she added that "I think that the president has explained what he meant."
Biden's comment came in response to one of Trump's supporters describing Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage." The president defended himself by explaining he only "referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter ... as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it."
