Privately‐owned housing starts in the United States observed a monthly drop of 14.8% in January and landed at 1,331,000, the US Census Bureau revealed in its report published on Friday. However, the figure was 0.7% below the January 2023 rate.
Single-family housing starts fell 4.7% to 1,004,000 on a monthly basis, but single‐family housing completions plunged 16.3% to 857,000 units. Privately‐owned housing completions in December went down by 8.1% compared to the previous month to stand at 1,416,000, the rate rose 2.8% above the January 2023 rate of 1,377,000.
Building permits for privately owned housing units fell by 1.5% to stand at 1,470,000 in January but climbed by 8.6% on an annual basis. However, single‐family authorizations in January rose 1.6% to reach 1,015,000.
