IOC: Question on Peng Shuai's safety answered

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach stressed on Wednesday that the organization has answered the question of whether Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai is safe or not by meeting with her in person during the ongoing 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

"This is why we invited her for a meeting here, to show everybody it is not just a one-off effort. We will keep this contact up. We answered the question 'where is Peng Shuai?' We are continuing by having invited her to come to Lausanne," he told reporters.

The controversy surrounding Peng's safety and whereabouts arose in November 2021 when she published a post on Sina Weibo in which she accused former Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault. After that, Peng disappeared for nearly three weeks. The IOC later had a call with her and confirmed she is safe.
