Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that Iran refused to negotiate directly with the United States in response to a letter sent to Tehran by United States President Donald Trump. However, he said that "the path to indirect negotiations is open," according to the Iranian Tasnim news agency.
Pezeshkian added that Iran has never avoided negotiations and that the only issue in talks was a "breach of promises," likely referring to the US withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2018. He insisted that "trust must be restored" and that Washington's actions will determine the outcome of future negotiations.
