Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced his resignation from the post on Wednesday, confirming previous reports by the Irish Independent. He detailed that he will be leaving "as soon as my successor is able to take up the office."

During a press conference, Varadkar added that he will also be stepping down from his position as the Fine Gael leader, a party he has led since 2017. This decision is effective today.

A new party leader should be chosen before the ardfheis (annual party conference), while a new prime minister should be elected following the Easter break. Varadkar served as prime minister two times, first from 2017 to 2020, and then from December 2022 until now. "My reasons for stepping down are both personal and political," he stated.
