Israel's high court: Ex-Shin Bet head to stay for now

Israel's High Court ruled on Tuesday that Ronen Bar (pictured middle) must remain head of the domestic intelligence service Shin Bet until the government and the attorney general's (AG) office come up with a solution to the legal controversy that arose after the official's dismissal.

The court urged the government and the AG office to reach an agreement by April 20. It also imposed an interim injunction on the case, barring the government from firing Bar and officially announcing a replacement before that deadline.

The tensions surrounding the dismissal of Bar emerged after some members of the public, including AG Gali Baharav-Miara, disputed the government's right to fire Shin Bet's director. In the meantime, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu selected former Navy Commander Major General Eli Sharvit to replace Bar, but changed his mind amid the allegations that Sharvit may have taken part in the protests against the government's controversial juridical reform proposal.
