Israel joins US in UN Human Rights Council withdrawal

Israel Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced Wednesday that his country is withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), aligning with the same move by the government of the United States.

Saar criticized the Council for what he described as a persistent bias against Israel. He pointed out that the body has been fixated on "demonizing" Israel, which he considers the only democracy in the Middle East, while disregarding human rights abuses elsewhere. Saar also noted that Israel is the only country singled out with its own agenda item, "subject to over 100 condemnatory resolutions," more than nations like Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela combined.

"The discrimination against us is clear … Israel will not accept this discrimination any longer!" he stressed.
