Italian PM Conte submits resignation to president

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has officially offered his resignation to the country's president, Sergio Mattarella, the president's office confirmed on Tuesday.

The move was announced the day before by Conte's cabinet after former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi decided to withdraw his party from the ruling coalition.

Mattarella's office confirmed that he has accepted Conte's request and unveiled that the consultations with relevant political parties will commence on Wednesday, while Conte was asked to assume the role of a caretaker until the negotiations come to a close.
