Ekrem Imamoglu has won the primary election and will represent his party at Turkey's 2028 presidential election, his Republican People's Party (CHP) told AFP on Monday. Imamoglu served as mayor of Istanbul until he was arrested on March 19 on corruption charges. He faces several legal challenges that could ban him from running for president.

Imamoglu's arrest sparked mass protests across Turkey and clashes with the police. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defended the decision, accusing the CHP of "theatrics."
