Japan's top currency diplomat, Masato Kanda Mimura, said that a meeting was held on Wednesday to address concerns over recent volatility in financial markets triggered by the United States' decision to impose global tariffs on April 2, with Japanese goods receiving 24%.
Speaking to reporters, Mimura stressed that Japan would "strongly urge" the US to exempt Japan from tariffs and emphasized the importance of stable currency movements based on economic fundamentals. He also confirmed ongoing discussions with the US Treasury, underlining the need for cooperation during uncertain times. This week, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed to start trade negotiations with Washington.
