Japan is intensifying its military presence on the southwestern islands close to Taiwan, including Yonaguni, Miyako, and Ishigaki, in response to escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, Nikkei Asia reported on Sunday.
According to the media, a new unit specializing in electronic combat became operational this month at a Ground Self-Defense Force base on Yonaguni, just 110 km from Taiwan. This unit, consisting of about 50 personnel, is tasked with intercepting enemy communications and jamming radar.
The Defense Ministry's plans include deploying surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni and expanding the base to accommodate the growing military presence. This military buildup comes amid reports of persistent Chinese incursions into Japanese territorial waters and ballistic missile landings in Japan's exclusive economic zone in 2022.
